We were there too on Friday. We parked at the Pioneer Mail trailhead and hiked north on the PCT. Yes, it was extremely windy! Beautiful clear day, though. Love your pictures!

Hi Jason, there is a good trail to the Palm Grove. You can also go beyond the Palm Grove through the canyon for quite awhile longer. Both are good ways to see nature without to much difficulty

Hi Jeremy,

I was thinking about trying to hike this on the coming weekend with a group of friends. We’re all novice hikers but are in shape.

Is there an approach (close to the Borrego Palm Canyon trail) that’d you recommend or should we just be steering clear of this? Just looking for something where we can get a work out and enjoy some nature!

I did this hike less than one moth ago and used your blog to prepare for it. I found it very helpful. I noted there is a use trail all the way up to the ridge now This, I think , helps to avoid the exposure significantly. There were only a couple of tricky spots but nothing too demanding. I went down the conventional way , using the dirt road. I’m definitely downclimbing it next time, before the summer hits. I found multiple ticks on me after the hike and had to negotiate tons of poison oak at the stream crossing .

Pretty cool that you were there a day before me.

We braved the thick brush from The Thimble to Ysidro, however, which took some serious time and scratches. I also noticed that you cut into the private property are between The Thimble and White. We avoided that, which really did look tempting, but there was a firing range near that area that we didn’t want to approach and I didn’t want to encourage people to trespass.

I do believe that the picture you indicate of Chief Rock is actually Chimney Rock. Chief Rock is just to the southeast of White BM.

I’m a bit of a novice, so the down climb was not intuitive in the least. Got lost on the west side of the ridge down climbing. BEWARE OF THIS. Just had a horrible afternoon of guessing games, back tracking, and exposed traversing. When at first I couldn’t get across the San Diego river without getting my feet wet, I knew I was in for a day . .

Otherwise, saw a massive golden eagle and the climb up the ridge, though the approach was tricky to find, was quite exhilarating!

Unless there is a major storm a few days before your hike there will not be much snow. The snow usually melts within a few days on Mt. Laguna

I climbed the south arete today and it was warm with a nice breeze. Lots of new plant growth from the recent rains and even some early flowers. you post was informative prior to my attempt,thanks.
I read a posted by Tedwater above and I thinkI can clarify the situation for him. Likely the more intense exposure was past the last large cairn before you plateau. I tried 2 doable class routes but didn’t like the idea of downclimbing them on the return back down, the handholds and ledges were less than spectacular. So I went down to the aforementioned cairn and went west and immediately found a route in the shadow of the arete, which avoids the exposure completely. Try this next time.

Thank You for such a great account. It was our plan to go there too. We began about 7:30 a.m. and less than an our into the hike from Manker Flats, my boyfriend, Hugh Kevin Scott collapsed and fell down about about 15-20 feet down. I was behind him and saw him laying down and run up the trail and he was uncounsious and not breathing. Someone else came running and we began CPR. Other people came to help me, and we were giving CPR for the entire time until the paramedics teams arrived about 45 min later. I lost sense of time. A hiker/doctor also helped us with CPR, and authorized the electric shocks but Hugh did not survived. I was in shocked and could not believe it. It happened so sudden. I am devastated. Hugh was a great person. He was very smart, kind, generous, and a truly gentleman. He irradiated peace, tranquility, love and spirituality, and I was very lucky to have him by my side. I always thought I had an angel with me. We had great plans for the future: moving together in January, getting married and having a family. We were so happy together, and now this? I am devastated about loosing him. I believe in miracles and I am praying that he will come back to me. Thanks to all the great people who stopped to help me. Lots of great people tried to help me, and I Thank You All very much. I want to thank the hiker/doctor and all the county paramedics, police, firefighters who came to help Hugh. His family and I are completely devastated about the loss of such a great person. I love Hugh and miss him a lot.

I am not sure exactly what ledge you are talking about but there were only a few places where we had to be careful climbing. Most of the route was class 2. There were a few spots with easy class 3. if you go to far west on the ridge the exposure is much worse.

hear me on out this, say about 80% of the way up the ridge, there is a small ledge and it starts to get more steep and technical, and you have some real exposure on either side of you, does it continue like that the rest of the way up?

Very cool. You were there a week before me. I saw some people take that chute from Trail Crest to Trail Camp. Probably shaved off an hour of ruthless downhill on those switchbacks. I had been considering the Mountaineers Route, but I am glad I went my way. Some other time, though. Good job and nice pictures.

Nice trip report. It is really astonishing how quickly the snow has melted. I climbed the Northeast Face of Baldy on May 25 and we were on snow for 2500 vertical feet. Three weeks later it appears to be mostly gone.

I am planning on summiting San Jacinto again in three weeks from Marion Mountain Trailhead. I am hoping there won’t be too much snow by then. Should be a nice training hike.

Absolutely stunning hike and great report. I love those hikes that are a mixture of green and snow.

Thanks for the comments Nick! Yeah I am very prone to altitude sickness, the worst time I have ever had it was on Torreys Peak in Colorado I will go back to Split at some point in the future

Great writeup and pictures! I have yet to hike Mt. Baldy in the winter, but now that I have been practicing with my ice axe and crampons I think it will be the first real mountaineering trip I attempt. Your time was impressive.

These are a lot different than the desert scrambles of last month!

I believe that is a Horned Lizard. I’ve seen them around the county and have pictures on my Mount Gower, Combs Peak, and lately at my Indian Hill trip reports. They seem to be all over the county and in various colors. I also saw some near Eagle Peak and couldn’t snap a picture in time.

It’s amazing how different this trail looks from about a month ago. I entered from a slightly different trailhead to the south, but the bulk of the hike was the same. We couldn’t find the benchmark under the snow, though.

And 5 months is being generous. This year, it’s like two months of cooler weather. It’s already heating up out in the desert.

I enjoy scrambling, but after the last few hikes, it would be nice to have a maintained trail I could trot down or simply hike while I get into my zen state. Scrambling can be mentally and physically tiresome, if done all the time.

We have it all down here in San Diego.

Yeah I enjoy the desert peaks because of the ample scrambling opportunities. The only problem is the 5 month window every year to hike out here.

There are definitely opportunities to hike multiple peaks even in a single day.

Yeah it was a little unnerving especially because I was by myself. I am going to attempt this again this weekend but if for some reason it does not workout would you want to try again with me.

Also I did not use the standard DPS route, I used the SE Ridge route which is shorter but much steeper.
